One tree, drawn over and over

Scroll down and time moves forward

Every work on this page is drawn by hand on an iPad, in Procreate. There is no photograph underneath and no algorithm. The density is built by laying strokes over strokes.

The shape stays a tree. What changes is what has been done to it. Marketplaces scatter these into a grid, so the order gets lost. This page puts it back.

Growth rings

zen`s song tree · 503 works · minted 2023.05

Growth rings sit inside a tree. Here they are brought out to the surface. Once outside they cannot stay as clean circles — they twist and break, and that is what the layered bands are. The bottom of each picture is root, the top is branch.

Reduction

my life and my tree · 40 works · minted 2025.02

The background drops to one flat colour. The bands flatten into outlined patches, so the tree is now read by its edge rather than its grain. A few hard-edged bars enter — the first straight lines in the series.

Fragments

Fragments of the Forest Noise (17) · From Ash to Moonlight (10) · minted 2025.08

The form comes apart. In some of these the trunk still holds and the pieces stay on the axis; in others they drift off it and the picture stops reading as a tree at all. This is the point in the sequence where the shape is closest to being lost.

Horizon

Ashborne Cycle | Circle Variations · 7 works · minted 2025.09

A horizon line arrives and the mass lies down along it instead of standing. Translucent discs overlap, and where they cross the colour mixes. The roots now hang below the line rather than stand on it.

Standing again

Ashborne Trees | Fractured Forest · 5 works · minted 2026.08

The form stands upright again on one flat colour, the same composition as 2025. The pieces holding it up are the broken ones from the fragment stage. They were put back on the axis, not repaired.

Split ground

Ashborne Forests | Shifting Ground · 7 works · minted 2026.08

Made in the same month as the works above, not after them. Here the ground itself splits into two colour fields — one over, one under — and the roots go down into the lower one. The discs stay.
